Is the Victoria Falls Marathon happening in 2027?
Yes. The official race website confirms the next edition for Sunday 4 July 2027 in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, and the AIMS world running calendar lists the same date. The race has opened the July running calendar every year since 2022, so a 2027 trip can be planned around a fixed date with room to spare.
The race programme
Five distances on race morning
Provisional 2027 start times, all on Sunday 4 July. The final cut off for every distance is 12h30.
42.2km
Full Marathon
Starts 06h15. The measured road course out to the bridge and along Zambezi Drive, with the falls and the gorge in view.
21.1km
Half Marathon
Starts 07h15. The most popular entry for runners combining the race with a falls holiday for the first time.
2 runners x 10.5km
Team Relay
Starts 06h45. Two runners share the race, which suits office teams and friends who want the finish line without a full marathon.
18km
Specially Abled
Starts 06h55. A shorter measured route for wheelchair and handcycle entrants.
About 7km
Fun Run
Starts 07h45. The family and spectator entry, and the easiest way for supporters to take part on race morning.
Because the course is measured under World Athletics rules, times set here count as official records, and the marathon also serves as a qualifier for the Comrades Marathon.
The course
Where the route actually runs
A road race through town and along the Zambezi, not a trail event. Turnarounds keep runners inside Zimbabwe.
The route
Runners set off from Baobab Primary School in the town suburbs, then head out toward the Victoria Falls Bridge, where the Zambezi and the gorge are in view. From there the course follows Zambezi Drive and Park Way toward the Victoria Falls National Park entrance, passing the Big Tree landmark. Wildlife is present along this corridor, which is why anti poaching and national parks rangers patrol the route on race morning.
The terrain is rolling rather than flat. Runners aiming for a personal best should pace the out and back sections carefully rather than banking on a flat course.

Race week
How a five day marathon trip runs
The gun is fixed, so the trip is built backwards from it. This is the shape most clubs and corporate teams use.
Thursday 1 July 2027
Arrive and settle
Group airport transfer, rooms checked early, a slow 20 minute orientation walk to the race pack collection point, and an early dinner. No long activity day on arrival.
Friday 2 July 2027
Race pack and shakeout
Collect bibs and timing chips at the expo, then a short easy shakeout run along Zambezi Drive. Afternoon left open for a guided rainforest visit or a rest day.
Saturday 3 July 2027
Rest and prepare
A gentle morning only: a Zambezi game drive or a late breakfast in town. Early night, kit laid out, and a packed breakfast arranged for the runners.
Sunday 4 July 2027
Race day
Transfers from 05:00 for the 06h15 start, supporters positioned at the finish, then hot water, food and a long recovery lunch back at the lodge.
Monday 5 July 2027
Recover or extend
A walking falls tour, a cultural village visit, or departure. Runners who raced the full distance usually skip anything strenuous on this day.
Conditions
What July feels like on the course
Race morning is cold, the middle of the day is bright and dry, and the water level shapes what else your group can do.
Cold start, warm finish
Temperatures at the 06h15 gun commonly sit between 8 and 13°C, rising to 24 to 26°C by mid morning. Bring layers you are willing to lose at the start line and plan for strong sun on the way back.
Dry season, dust and spray
July is one of the driest months, with almost no rain. Expect dust on the roadside sections and heavy spray near the cataract, which is why the rainforest walk is a wet one.
Altitude is mild
Victoria Falls sits at roughly 1,000m above sea level, with the airport at 1,064m. It is high enough to notice in a fast marathon and low enough that most visitors adjust within a day.
The falls are still running full
July sits just after the high water peak, so the curtain is strong and the rainforest is green. It is a good month for photographs of the waterfall itself.
Devil's Pool is closed
The swim on the Zambian side runs from about mid August to mid January. In July the water is too high, so do not build a race trip around it.
Rafting is limited
White water seasons follow the river level, and July usually falls outside the main rafting window. Tell us if the group wants rafting and we will check the operating calendar before you book.
Getting there
Flights, borders and transfers
Three ways into Victoria Falls for race weekend, and what each one costs the group in time.
Victoria Falls airport
Victoria Falls International Airport, code VFA, is 18 to 21km from town and the shortest journey to the start. We meet the group on arrival and hold a vehicle for the 05:00 race morning run.
Fly into Livingstone
Harry Mwanga Nkumbula International in Livingstone, Zambia, often works better on schedule and price. It adds a road transfer and a border crossing, so build the buffer into arrival day rather than race morning.
Road from within Zimbabwe
A coach from Bulawayo is roughly a full day, and Harare longer. School groups and clubs travelling together often prefer this, with an overnight stop arranged on the way up.
Visa requirements are confirmed for each group before travel. The KAZA UNIVISA is issued at Victoria Falls airport and the Victoria Falls and Kazungula borders only, so groups arriving through Harare cannot pick it up on the way.
Entry costs
What it costs to register
2027 fees are not yet published. The 2025 scale below shows how entries are tiered by nationality, so a group can budget honestly.
| Runner category | Marathon, half, relay and 18km | Fun run |
|---|---|---|
| Zimbabwean citizens and residents | USD 15 | USD 10 |
| Other SADC citizens and residents | USD 50 | USD 10 |
| International runners | USD 75 | USD 15 |
These are 2025 figures, shown as indicative only. Team relay entries are priced per team rather than per runner, and 2027 amounts are expected to follow the same national, SADC and international tiers. What the entry fee includes beyond timing is not itemised on the official site, so confirm the finisher pack when entries open.
For the people who are not running
What supporters do while the field is out
Half a race trip is usually made up of non runners. These blocks fit inside a race morning and a tired afternoon.
Guided Victoria Falls rainforest walk
Two to three hours along the top of the gorge, best on Friday or Monday rather than race morning. The spray is still strong in July, so expect to get wet near the cataract.
Zambezi sunset cruise
About two and a half hours on the water. The easiest add on for supporters and the gentlest option for runners the day after racing.
Helicopter Flight of Angels
A 12 to 15 minute flight over the falls and the gorge. Short, seated and worth doing on a day when legs are too tired for walking.
Zambezi National Park game drive
A morning drive for elephant, buffalo and antelope. Place it before race day, not after, so the wake up is not a problem.
Cultural village and market visit
Half a day with craft stalls and a community visit. Good for non running partners and children while the field is out on the course.
Bridge views rather than bridge thrills
Bungee, the zip line and the gorge swing sit near the course turnaround. Most clubs leave them for a later trip and spend race weekend recovering instead.

Clubs, corporate teams and charity entrants
A room block held together, early breakfasts or packed breakfasts on race morning, one vehicle moving the group to the start, a support car following the course, and bib collection handled as a group so nobody arrives at the expo on the last day. We quote these from 3 runners upward, and larger clubs are split across neighbouring properties when a single lodge cannot hold the field.
Supporters and families
The people who come to cheer
Partners, children and club friends who are not racing still need a trip: a falls tour, a cruise, a game drive and a place at the finish line. We arrange spectator transfers to the finish, keep the fun run entry for the family members who want to cross the line too, and plan a recovery afternoon rather than a packed schedule once the medals are done.
Victoria Falls Marathon travel FAQs
Is the Victoria Falls Marathon confirmed for 2027?
Yes. The official race website lists the next edition as Sunday 4 July 2027 in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, and the AIMS world running calendar shows the same date. The race has been held in early July every year since 2022, normally on the first Sunday of the month, so the date fits the established pattern.
When do entries open for the 2027 Victoria Falls Marathon?
The official website states that entries open in March 2027 and are handled through the TopEvents online portal used by the race. Entry usually closes in June or once the field is full, so a group that needs rooms in town should secure accommodation before waiting on race registration.
Which distances can our group enter?
The programme covers the full marathon at 42.2km, the half marathon at 21.1km, a two runner team relay of 10.5km each, an 18km specially abled category, and a fun run of about 7km. That mix is why running clubs bring non running partners and children along: everyone on the trip gets something to do on the same morning.
Is the Victoria Falls Marathon course fast or hilly?
It is a road race on sealed roads, not a trail event. The route runs through Victoria Falls town suburbs, out toward the Victoria Falls Bridge, then along Zambezi Drive and Park Way toward the Victoria Falls National Park entrance, passing the Big Tree landmark. The terrain is rolling rather than flat, and the course is officially measured under World Athletics rules, so recorded times count and the race serves as a Comrades Marathon qualifier. A total elevation figure is not published.
What is the weather like in Victoria Falls on race morning?
July is the dry winter season, with almost no rain. Race morning at the 06:15 start is genuinely cold, commonly between 8 and 13°C, so runners need layers they can discard at the line. By mid morning it is sunny and mild, around 24 to 26°C, with strong sun, so plan for shade and fluids on the return leg.
What time does the race start and when does it close?
Provisional 2027 start times are the full marathon at 06h15, the team relay at 06h45, the specially abled category at 06h55, the half marathon at 07h15 and the fun run at 07h45. The final cut off for all distances is 12h30, with a sweep vehicle behind the last runners.
How does a group get to Victoria Falls for race weekend?
Victoria Falls International Airport, code VFA, sits 18 to 21km from town and is the simplest option. Flying into Livingstone in Zambia works too, with a road transfer and a border crossing on arrival or departure. By road it is roughly a full day from Bulawayo and longer from Harare. We arrange group transfers on whichever route you choose, timed to the race morning.
Can our group visit Zambia or Botswana on the same trip?
The KAZA UNIVISA, currently US$50, is issued at Victoria Falls airport and at the Victoria Falls and Kazungula borders, and covers Zimbabwe and Zambia for 30 days with day trips into Botswana's Chobe area. It is not issued at Harare or Bulawayo airports. Visa rules depend on your passport, so we confirm requirements for each group before travel.
Does the race support local conservation?
Yes. The race names local beneficiaries including the Victoria Falls Anti Poaching Unit, which patrols the route corridor and surrounding land, Ele-Collection, which employs waste collectors to clear plastic around town, the Pristine Victoria Falls Society and the Greenline Africa Trust. Runners can add a donation to these causes during registration.
How big is the field?
The race began in 2006 with about 300 runners and has grown into the largest marathon in Zimbabwe. The 2026 edition was reported as a record field of just over 6,000 participants from more than 44 countries, about 14 percent up on the previous year, with entrants arriving from Kenya, South Africa, Germany, France, the United Kingdom and Australia.
Can you organise travel for a running club or corporate team?
Yes. We hold a room block for the group, arrange early or packed breakfasts on race morning, move everyone together to the start, keep a vehicle on standby along the course, and plan recovery and spectator days for the people who are not running. Quote is separate from a standard tour because the timing is fixed by the gun.
